Money: Our Classroom Economy

We are learning about money and making change.

Money Master Game

Students will:
  1. Participate in a classroom economy designed to mimic real world economic activity.
  2. Add and subtract money amounts.
  3. Evaluate the importance of classroom jobs and daily responsibilities.
  4. Perform classroom jobs to earn daily salaries.
  5. Budget their money and balance their accounts.
  6. Pay bills (desk and chair rental, library fees, etc.)
  7. Reflect on the importance of saving money.
  8. Buy rewards (wear a hat in class, new pencil, sit at Mrs. Bacchus' desk, computer time, etc.)

What is Matter?

Everything around us is matter.  It is anything you can see, feel, touch or smell.  Matter takes up space.  Even you are made of matter!
Matter comes in three main forms.  Matter can be a solid.  It can be a liquid.  It can be a gas.
A glass is a solid.  Orange juice is a liquid.  The air we breathe is a gas.

By the end of this unit, Grade 2 students will be able to:
  • identify objects as liquids or solids
  • describe the properties of liquids and solids
  • describe water in liquid and solid forms
  • identify what makes objects change states (liquid to solid, or solid to liquid)

Bullying Awareness Week 2013

Our school will be participating in lots of fun events for Bullying Awareness Week.  Today we chose five character virtues that teachers will be watching for.  Students who show these characteristics will be entered into a draw at the end of the week!

We will also be welcoming some of the older students at our school into our class to share some ideas about bullying.  On Friday, we'll all try to wear pink to show we STAND UP against bullying.

Forces and Movement

Grade 2s have begun a unit on Movement.  So far, we've talked about the different ways in which objects can move.  We also learned that there are 6 types of simple machines and have been reading books about what they are.  Soon, we will be able to describe each type of simple machine and give examples.

Grade 3s have begun a unit on Force.  We know that force is a push or a pull, and movement can mean changing direction or position.  We have looked for examples of forces and their effects (e.g. slow down a moving object, change the shape of an object, or make a moving object move in a different direction.)  We will learn about 6 different types of forces:
  1. Gravity
  2. Muscular Force
  3. Buoyancy
  4. Friction

Here is a link to the Ontario Achievement Levels from the Ministry of Education.  On page 14, if you look at Math, the expectations are separated into Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application. 

On students' tests, I separate their marks into Understanding (which encompasses Knowledge and Understanding and Thinking), Communication, and Problem Solving (the name we use for Application).

I hope this helps you to understand more specifically where your child can improve.  If you have any questions, please send a note in your child's agenda.

6 Tips for Preparing for a Test

Grade 2/3s have a unit test in Math on Tuesday.  Monday will be a Review Day.  Here are some tips for studying.

1. Look through the work we have done in this unit. What parts do you understand well? What parts do you need a bit of help with? What questions do you have?

2. Make a list of questions you have for Mrs. Bacchus so we can talk about them in class.

3. Play teacher.  If you can teach it to someone else, you must have a good understanding of the idea.  Ask a parent, brother, sister, or stuffed animal to be your student and teach away!

4. Talk out loud, especially about your thinking in Math.  In class, we are working on recording our thinking on paper so the reader can clearly understand what we were thinking.  One of the best ways to practice this is to explain it to someone out loud and then write down exactly what you said.

5. Try to correct any mistakes in your work.  If you don't understand, please ask me for help!

6. Play some of the games on this blog for extra practice.

In our class, we use the Daily 5 language program.  It is the structure that helps us fit all the pieces of the Literacy puzzle together, including:
  • independent reading and writing
  • shared reading and writing
  • guided reading and writing
  • read-alouds
  • modeled writing
  • word work and spelling
  • grammar
It also helps us to work independently, in groups, and one-on-one with the teacher.  We have learned to Read to Self and Work on Writing so far.  Next up: Listen to Reading, which will help us build our reading fluency.

Mrs. Bacchus' Top 5 Back-to-School Books

If you live in Ontario, you've probably survived Week 1 and are just starting Week 2 of school.  The first FULL week of school.

Some of my favourite books that I read aloud to my students are the ones that help me start off the year.  Here are my Top 5 Favourites!

1. You're Finally Here!

This book reminds me of the Pigeon series by Mo Willems.  The character talks to you and demands answers about what took you so long.  Guaranteed to have all little ones engaged and giggling.  It's not specifically about school, so it could be used on other occasions.

2. Splat The Cat: Back To School Splat!
 

I loved reading series as a kid. And as a teacher or parent, they are one of the best ways to help kids love reading. When you find a great character like Splat the Cat, you know he'll be a fast favourite.

3. Froggy Goes to School

There's an underwear joke: instant hit!

4. Wow! School!
 

Great for young readers with it's simple text and building excitement about all the new things you find at school.

5. First Day Jitters

This book is a great way to share some empathy about being nervous on the first day of school. Everyone loves an ending with a twist!

May will be a busy month!  Here are some important dates:

News:
Congratulations to our Grade 2 students who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday!  The Grade 2s will have the opportunity to lead the school in Mass on May 24th in the gym.  All are invited to share in the celebration of the Mass.

Language Arts:
We are reading Fairy Tales and are exploring the features of Narrative texts.  Students are also learning to write narratives.  We have been writing personal narratives in our journals for most of the year, and will begin to write our own Fairy Tales.  We will also dig deeper into the writing process. 

Week 30 will be the final week of new spelling activities on spellingcity.com.  From then on, we will be reviewing our word wall words for the year.  I will leave the lists posted through the summer months for continued practice.

Math:
Our new unit is called Linear Measurement, Area, and Perimeter and we will be comparing, estimating, and ordering lengths.  We will use a number of non-standard unit of measurement (hands, paper clips, cubes) as well as standard units (centimetres, metres).  Grade 1s will then focus on estimating and comparing areas, while Grade 2s will learn about area and the "distance around" objects (perimeter).  Stay tuned for lots of fun practice activities on our class blog.

Social Studies:
We will be learning:

·         How to correctly use the terms culture, celebrations, heritage, traditions.

·         What are some of the cultures that make up our community?

·         What traditions are passed down from earlier generations?

·         How are heritage and traditions passed on?

·         What are the origins of your family members?

·         What are the similarities and differences in celebrations among cultures?

·         Ask questions to find out about your family history and create a family tree. (This will be an assignment near the end of the unit.  More information will be sent home soon.)

·         Compare community celebrations that reflect your own heritage and Canadian identity

Religion:
May is the month of Mary, and we will be learning songs and stories about Mary.  We will also discuss diversity and recognize human contributions to our world.

First Communion Pictures

    "Life Touch" will be at the church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27th for First Communion Photos. There will be a group photo and individual photos taken. Each child will receive a complimentary 8x10 of the group photo and complimentary individual photos, provided they have their picture taken (includes 1 - 8x10, 2 - 5x7's, 4 - 3x5's, 4 - 2/3's and 8 minis). Since there is no charge for the photos, there will be no other flyers or notices from "Life Touch". 

The Grade 2s had a wonderful day at their First Communion Retreat today.  Please enjoy all of the treasures they brought home to share with you.  Many thanks to Mrs. T for volunteering her time to be with us and teach us about the special things we see at Mass.

Today in class, we made two different paper bridges using arches and triangles.  We learned that those shapes make bridges STRONG and STABLE.  We have also tried standing with our feet together and then spreading them apart to explore what it means for a structure to be stable.

Base Ten Blocks

Grade 1s are learning to show numbers using "base ten blocks".  These blocks help us to learn place value, addition, subtraction, and someday percents and decimals.  We want to be very comfortable using them to show numbers.  Right now, we are practicing counting objects in groups of ten with "leftover" ones.

New Math Unit: 3-D Geometry

Grade 1 Learning Goals:
